Jan 21, 2007: Sunny and calm weekend
This weekend, we have had the most quiet days so far: No wind, no waves and a lot of sunshine. A sailboat would be stuck now. But our skippers were very pleased with the charged batteries.
This Saturday was doubtless one of the most quiet days so far; the constant powerful sound of the waves receded – deep stillness, soft splashing of the boat. After the dissipation of the morning clouds, it became the day with the longest sunshine segment. In the morning, the sea surface was still pretty ruffled. Before sunset, it became smooth and mirror like. A sailboat would be stuck now, in the calm. The deck again served as a living and working space. Our captains were very pleased with the charged 825 Ampèrehours – a top result, but very urgent. After sunset, the sea turned golden, then orange-blue; a thin sickle moon appeared next to the bright Venus star. And at the same time, the whole disk of the moon was visible and all crewmembers admired it through the binoculars. This uneven couple slowly moved towards the darkening sea.
Our position on Saturday: 17° 55' N. 41° 23' W.
No wind.
Speed: 3,2 knots. Mileage today: 82 miles.
Sunday was the second day of real calm; we could even play a violin duet on deck.
Where are you trade winds ("Passat")? A few days ago (see report of 16th of Jan.), we asked ourselves whether this wind would be our continuous companion. Maybe, the storm in Europe has sucked it away? Anyway, we are experiencing just the opposite of a big storm. In the dusk, tunas seem to hunt "Bettmümpfelis" that makes mackerels jump out of the sea. They do not want to be transmuted into a "Bettmümpfeli" ("before bed snack").
